'Your mother is a whore'; the classic heavy Tagalog insult.

Rank #16 · Strength 4/5 (provisional)

What it is

Putang ina is compressed Tagalog: puta (from Spanish puta, “whore”) plus ina, “mother” — “your mother is a whore”, usually Englished as “son of a bitch” or “son of a whore”. It is the classic heavy Tagalog insult: the Philippines’ counterpart to hijo de puta, from the same Spanish root stock and the same honour logic, aimed at a man through his mother.

How it sounds

Four syllables — poo-tang ee-NA — with the stress late. With the possessive added it extends: putang ina mo, “your (whore) mother”, which is the exact form in the presidential clip below. Without mo, it doubles as a general shout of frustration, the way English speakers fire “son of a bitch” at a situation rather than a person.

Forms

Directed. Putang ina mo, aimed at a named person, is the full insult — see the president below.

Bare. As an exclamation at events, it is everyday Filipino venting: strong, but unremarkable.

The two forms are separated by exactly one word — mo — and by everything that follows socially.

Use and cost

The cost exhibit for this entry is diplomatic. On 5 September 2016, leaving for the ASEAN summit in Laos, President Rodrigo Duterte warned Barack Obama not to raise extrajudicial killings: “You must be respectful. Do not just throw questions. Putang ina, I will swear at you in that forum.”

Washington cancelled the bilateral meeting. Manila issued statements expressing regret that the remarks “came across as a personal attack” on the US president. Duterte had previously used the same epithet against Pope Francis — he later apologised — and against the US ambassador. A swear word that cancels a presidential meeting has a measurable cost. This entry is the proof.

On screen

On screen, the word belongs to Heneral Luna (2015). John Arcilla’s General Antonio Luna is portrayed as a potty-mouthed hothead whose putang ina outbursts are the film’s signature; director Jerrold Tarog has said Luna’s frequent use of the profanity was deliberate.

The outbursts escaped the film as a meme: screencaps of a bloodied face captioned “Putang-ina!”, used as a reaction image for every situation.
