'Shit' — France's everyday strong swear word.

Rank #18 · Strength 3/5 (provisional)

What it is

Merde is French for “shit”, and it is France’s everyday strong exclamation — the word French swearing starts from.

It also carries a meaning no other entry on this board has: in the theatre, telling an actor “merde” before a performance means good luck. It is the French “break a leg”.

How it sounds

One syllable, roughly “maird”, with the French r in the throat. Its most famous delivery stretches it inside a chain: the Merovingian’s rant below fires it as one link in “Nom de dieu de putain de bordel de merde…” — merde as ammunition in a string, not a solo shout.

Forms

Bare. “Oh merde !” — the standard exclamation, transcript-confirmed in the native teaching lesson collected for this entry (Français Immersion: “Comme ‘merde’ ou ‘putain’. Par exemple : ‘Oh merde !’”).

In a sentence. It punctures and intensifies like its English cousin, dropped into ordinary speech without ceremony.

The good-luck form. “Je te dis merde” — “I say merde to you” — is a wish of luck to a performer, an expression Marion Cotillard explained on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Say it to an actor before curtain and you have wished them well.

Directed. Personal insult is not merde’s main job in France; it is aimed at luck, objects and events.

Use and cost

Merde’s cost in France is low: it is the “familiar exclamation of frustration” of learner guides, heard constantly and censored rarely. This board’s frequency evidence for it comes from subtitle corpora — its frequency is measured, its severity is consensus.

The instructive contrast is inside this site’s own map. France’s merde is an everyday word, while Quebec took the same language’s church vocabulary and built tabarnak. Swear strength lives in the culture, not in the dictionary.

On screen

The Matrix Reloaded (2003) owns this word globally. Lambert Wilson’s Merovingian, explaining why he loves French, delivers the chain: “Nom de dieu de putain de bordel de merde de saloperie de connard d’enculer ta mère. It’s like wiping your arse with silk. I love it.”

It is the most recognisable merde delivery in world cinema — and note its form: not the bare exclamation, but merde buried mid-sentence in a connoisseur’s list.
