English

The universal English swear root — sex verb turned all-purpose intensifier.

Rank #5 · Strength 4/5 (provisional)

What it is

Fuck started as the verb “to have sex” and became the most flexible word in English: verb, noun, adjective, adverb, infix and pure punctuation. In Ofcom’s 2016 public sorting it sits in the “strongest” tier for general swearing, one of only three words there — cunt, fuck, motherfucker.

It is also, by the corpus evidence, a word in mid-deflation: the strongest tier’s most tolerated member.

How it sounds

One syllable, and uniquely placeable: English speakers can park it inside another word (“abso-fucking-lutely”) or between almost any two words of a sentence. Corpus work found it 12 times more frequent in spoken than in written British English (McEnery & Xiao 2004). It lives in the mouth, not on the page.

Forms

Bare. “Fuck!” — pain, shock, triumph. The default English exclamation.

In a sentence. The intensifier use (“fucking brilliant”, “what the fuck”) is now the dominant one. A 2023 corpus study (Love & Stenström, Journal of Pragmatics) compared London teenage conversation recorded in 1992 with south-east England teenage speech from 2014 and found fuck broadening into idiomatic, figurative and emphatic uses, with “very little evidence” of it being used as a term of abuse. Their conclusion: teenage fuck now behaves like “a relatively mild swear word”.

Directed. “Fuck you” remains a genuine insult — but it is the shrinking use, not the growing one.

Softened. Effing, the f-word, and feck — which Ofcom rates only “medium”.

Use and cost

In 2020s Britain the cost of fuck is mostly procedural: strongest-tier words belong after the 9pm watershed, and Ofcom’s 2021 and 2026 waves found audiences increasingly relaxed about swearing on TV and radio — especially accidental use followed by a timely apology — while their concern migrated to discriminatory language.

In US academic ratings (Beers Fägersten) fuck scores 5.0 out of 10, well below cunt’s 6.6. And unlike the board’s slur entry, there is no US pattern of terminations for it: at work it is a conduct and discipline matter, not a firing offence in itself.

On screen

The GIF on this page is The Wolf of Wall Street (2013): “let’s fuck”, captioned under Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort. The film’s famous scene clip is literally titled “Fuckety fuck fuck!” — the word as pure rhythm.

For delivery teaching, the clearest lesson collected for this entry is engVid’s Ronnie, a Canadian teacher working through real sentences — including the warning that doubles as usage guidance: “Don’t say ‘fuck’ in a job interview unless you’re a porn star.”
