Vulgar term for the penis; heavy all-purpose Brazilian swear word.
Caralho is the Portuguese word for the penis — “dick”. In Brazil, though, the literal meaning is often not the message: dictionaries record it as an interjection of indignation, admiration and surprise, and it is one of the most-used swear words in the country.
An older life survives alongside: caralho was also a name for a ship’s crow’s nest, the lookout platform — a piece of word history that Brazilian Portuguese lessons still teach.
Ka-RA-lyo in Brazilian pronunciation: three syllables with the soft “lh” in the middle. As an interjection it typically opens the sentence and is followed by a pause — “Caralho! …” — the pause doing the dramatic work before the rest arrives.
Bare. “Caralho!” — surprise, fright, rage, pain, or delight; tone and context decide which. A Brazilian lesson glosses it “Damn it / Fuck! — or Wow!”.
As an intensifier. Pra caralho (also para caralho), placed after a verb or adjective, means “a lot, extremely”: tá frio pra caralho — “it’s fucking cold”; tem gente pra caralho — “there are tons of people here”.
As a quality mark. Do caralho marks something exceptional, in either direction: esse show foi do caralho — “that concert was fucking amazing”.
Directed dismissal. Vai pro caralho — “go fuck yourself” — the form indexed to the GIF on this page.
Brazilian usage guidance converges on one rule: what matters is the target. Swear at situations and caralho is everyday speech; the praise uses above are normal excited talk, and Brazilian speakers themselves describe swearing as a way to express intensity of feeling — happiness included.
Aimed directly at a person, the same vocabulary stops being an intensifier and becomes an insult; aimed at a woman, the puta-family words are misogynistic insults outright. No Brazilian severity survey or fine was found for this entry: the cost is social aim, not law.

Mainstream sketch comedy is this word’s natural screen habitat in Brazil. No single film scene owns it the way Trainspotting owns cunt.
